I've started to follow the career of Beverly Rubik, Ph.D. Doctor Rubik is often given credit for one of my favorite quotes (so has Claire Booth Luce):
"You can recognize a pioneer by the arrows in his back."
As a person who has made their "career" being a pioneer, I can attest to "the truth" in her sentiment. I guess my ability to accept the situation comes from my belief in another quote, this one from Helen Keller ... "The heresy of one generation becomes the orthodoxy of the next."
If my job is to be out front excavating the fringe which results in a few arrows in the back ... and if so, then so be it. It's now kinda fun to know I've had my Vespa for seven years even though I was called a "girlie man" when I bought it. I was out front on that one.
Back to Dr. Rubik, she is the creator of what is called frontier science. I had never heard the phrase. She is eloquent in explaining frontier science's difference to what is often referred to as "fringe science". For her, frontier science is outside the mainstream however it has already tweaked the interest of the mainstream scholars. The concept sits between the established orthodoxy and fringe science. It may be where a tipping point between "the establishment" and "the movement" collide.
Dr. Rubick is a bio-physicist and as part of her illustrious career has founded the Center for Frontier Science at Temple University. The Center is the first of its kind and has been the fountainhead for sister centers in Mexico and Italy. The Center's work has been published and distributed to over 3,000 affiliates in over 50 countries. Obviously, the mainstream is listening.
I find her thoughts on (pardon the phrase) paradigm shift very interesting. The existing bio-medical and biological view of life is based upon humans being a "bag of bio-molecules". In this context the whole is the sum of the parts. In the existing orthodoxy consciences is the result of brain processes. Dr. Rubik thinks that we need to see the human being in a more holistic way. She believes we need to study energy flow and that certain subtle energies can not be reduced to molecules. She believes that as the pharmaceutical firms become predominant in medical care over the last 50 years and with their successes in acute diseases that the "molecular bag of parts" paradigm has sustained. She also thinks that this approach will not work for chronic degenerative diseases. It is now time to treat the whole person. The mind, in her point of view, is more than simply brain function. For example, she sites numerous studies that demonstrate that prayer ... even over long distances, has had effects with both people and molecules.
She draws from today's applied physics for an example. Quantum mechanics, reminds us that in the world everything is inter-connected. If particles were once connected and then disconnect or separate they remain correlated, even if on opposite sides of the universe.
What I find the most helpful in expanding one's thinking is that she sites numerous studies that show "results" but where we do not have an over arching theory to drive the context for those results. However, as we give ourselves permission to aggressively test theoretical context, we set up the conditions for the world to give itself "permission" to replace existing orthodoxy. Three cheers for people like her that push us forward. I. for one, would like to remove any arrow in her back that I can.

Watts,
Somehow the image of you as a 'girlie man' is just ludicrous.....Vespa or no...
Watts...even if you walked around town in nylons and shorts..you would be a 'manly man'....no doubts about YOUR manhood from this fan....
