Recently I was asked if I could help a friend obtain access to Joanne Woodward. It is not like Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward have been my best friends; however, living in a town of 25,000 people for 25+ years, and being engaged in the community ... like they have been ... results in a friendly context for all the interactions we have had.
I was asked to provide a concept to Joanne for the usage of her late husband's image by the Foundation For a Better Life. You may know the "FBL". They are a unique organization developed by a unique man. They create public service advertising campaigns to communicate the beliefs that make a difference in our communities ... beliefs (and values) like integrity, sacrifice, vision, forgiveness, character, and hope. All in all, they have identified 52 beliefs ... values that we will stand up for ... and their entire reason for being is to remind us of the importance of these " life constructs" to and for us ... our community ... our nation ... our world.
Their work airs on television ... is visible in outdoor signage ... radio ... theatre (yes, theatre) and the internet. Their presence is worldwide. You should go to their site to see the full list of 52 values. Their sole mission is to remind us to embrace and pass them on.
I had to work hard to find the enlightened person who created this foundation. A foundation that neither solicits nor accepts funds from people. They do accept people's gifts of support via the "advertising" world's generosity in helping put forth the message. They pair individuals with the value "lesson" they embody ... Gandhi? - soul ... Churchill? - commitment ... Lincoln? - persistence. They discover everyday people who embody these beliefs as well as the famous people.
I am reminded of how much I can influence ... yes, just me ... just you, each one of us by reminding ourselves of these values and doing our best, no matter how hard, to live them. Each message has a piece of copy that connects to a value and each advert ends with ... "pass it on".
I could write you so much about the individual who founded such a profound program. A program that has been recognized as the most successful public service program ever!! I like the fact that I've decided not to do that.
The sign they wanted to make for Paul Newman? "Overcome success ... humility ... pass it on" How appropriate for my hero!!

Have a great month.
